Two-path decision spread

Five positions compare two clearly defined options while keeping the same starting situation. Use it to organise questions about trade-offs.

Numbers identify positions; the reading sequence is explained below. Other versions may assign different roles.

Version and dealing convention

This page defines one numbered version. The local exercise uses the displayed deck and draw method; other traditions may change the arrangement or roles. Agree on the version before drawing. With the Major Arcana selected, use absolute deck positions 6, 12, 13, 19, 20. Other available decks use consecutive random draws.

A question to try

What should I examine before choosing option A or option B?

Before you draw

  1. Write one open question and define its scope. Keep factual questions separate from symbolic reflection.
  2. Choose the position order and decide whether to include reversals before drawing.
  3. Read each card in its role, then compare the positions. Note uncertainty and one practical next question.

Position guide

  1. 1

    Starting situation

Describe the shared need or constraint before separating the two paths.

  2. 2

    Path A: development

Consider what following A may ask of your effort, attention or resources.

  3. 3

    Path B: development

Ask the same questions of B so the comparison stays fair.

  4. 4

    Path A: possible result

Describe a conditional outcome and the assumptions behind it.

  5. 5

    Path B: possible result

Identify a possible result for B without treating a favourable card as a guarantee.

How to connect the positions

Reading sequence (read grouped roles together as explained below): 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5

Read 1 first, then compare 2 with 3 and 4 with 5. Keep the same time frame and criteria for both options. Write down one benefit, one cost and one unanswered factual question for each path before making a decision outside the spread.

What to watch for

Do not assign one option more cards or change its definition after seeing the draw. The cards cannot choose for you.

Your practice
